Watoto Welfare charity fietstoer: Cycling for a brighter future

On Saturday, 12 September 2026, Watoto Welfare hosted a charity bike ride in Deventer, the Netherlands, in partnership with Fietstoer Deventer and Deventer Uphill. The event brought together around 15 enthusiastic participants in support of a meaningful cause.

Guided by experienced volunteers from Fietstoer Deventer, participants discovered several of Deventer’s historic landmarks. As one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, Deventer offers a rich glimpse into the past. Behind the modern Deventer Library stands part of De Proosdij, dating back to around 1130 and recognised as the oldest surviving stone residential building in the Netherlands. Nearly 900 years of history remain visible in the city’s walls.

The tour offered participants a valuable opportunity to explore the city while promoting community spirit, active living, and solidarity.

Beyond cycling, the event had a clear humanitarian purpose: to raise funds for orphans and vulnerable children in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and help them access education. For the 2026–2027 school year, Watoto Welfare aims to directly support 100 children to attend school.

The charity bike ride was more than a day of cycling. It demonstrated community engagement, partnership, and solidarity, united by a shared commitment to expanding educational opportunities and building a brighter future for vulnerable children in Eastern DRC.
