Transforming Lives Through Action

Education Program:

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn

At Stichting Watoto Welfare, we believe education is one of the most powerful ways to break the cycle of poverty. In Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, many children cannot attend school because their families cannot afford fees, uniforms, books, and other essential learning materials. Children also need safe learning spaces and guidance. Years of armed conflict, displacement, and economic hardship have made access to education even more difficult.

Our Education Program removes these barriers so that vulnerable children can stay in school, complete their education, and build a brighter future.

What we support

Our program provides practical assistance and support children at risk of dropping out of school, our supports are based on each child’s needs, including:

  • Payment of school fees.
  • School uniforms and learning materials.
  • Exercise books, pens and essential supplies.
  • We provide and facilitate safe learning spaces and guidance for children in conflict zones.
  • Collaboration with parents, schools, local community leaders to monitor children’s attendance and progress.

Our local team works closely with schools to ensure that assistance reaches the children who need it most. We regularly follow up with families and school staff to encourage attendance and identify challenges early.

Who benefits from our programs?

We prioritise children from vulnerable households, including:

  • Children from families living in extreme poverty.
  • Orphans and other vulnerable children.
  • Children affected by conflict or displacement.
  • Children whose parents or caregivers cannot cover school-related costs.
  • Girls at risk of dropping out because of financial hardship.

Beneficiaries are identified through community leaders, school management committees, local volunteers, and household assessments. Each application is reviewed carefully to ensure support reaches the children with the greatest need.

Our approach

Guided by the principle “Learn, Do, and Earn,” we help youth and women gain practical skills, develop entrepreneurial mindsets, and access finance so they can build sustainable livelihoods, reduce dependence on aid, and strengthen their communities.
We believe education goes beyond paying school fees. We work with families and communities to support long-term school attendance and learning success. By easing financial barriers, children can stay in class, improve their learning outcomes, and develop the skills they need to become self-reliant adults.
Every donation helps create opportunities for children to learn, grow, and become future leaders in their communities.
